Recurring Reservations vs. Series

Recurring reservations are an important part of planning. Whether it's a weekly one-on-one meeting with your manager or a division-wide review meeting that happens on the second Tuesday of each month, recurring reservations make it easy to create the reservation once and let the server fill in the rest of the occurrences.

The key bit of information that allows recurring reservations to expand into individual occurrences is the recurrence rule. The rule specifies both how often a reservation repeats and for how long.

Each recurrence is made up of two parts:

  1. the recurrence pattern (how often),
  2. and the recurrence range (for how long).

Recurrence Patterns

Daily

The daily recurrence pattern causes an reservation to repeat based on a number of days between each occurrence.

Weekly

The weekly recurrence pattern causes a reservation to repeat on the same day or days of the week, based on the number of weeks between each set of occurrences.

Absolute monthly

The absolute monthly pattern causes a reservation to repeat on the same day of the month (for example, the 15th), based on the number of months between each occurrence.

Relative monthly

The relative monthly pattern causes a reservation to repeat on the same day of the week in the same relative position in the month, based on the number of months between each occurrence. For example, "every second Wednesday of the month."

Absolute yearly

The absolute yearly pattern causes a reservation to repeat on the same month and day (for example, April 15), based on the number of years between each occurrence.

Relative yearly

The relative yearly pattern causes a reservation to repeat on the same day of the week in the same relative position in a specific month, based on the number of years between each occurrence. For example, "every last Wednesday of November."

Series

A series does not repeat a pattern. A series is not limited to a specific range of dates.

Reservations in a series can have completely different attributes, duration, dates and times. A series is connected by a unique ID. Sometimes a recurrence pattern does not capture all the dates and/or times desired. For example, a reccurring reservation on Thursdays will be not be available on Thanksgiving. For a variety of reasons you might need to modify one or more reservations defined by a recurrence pattern. A series will keep all the rervations as a cohesive group regardless of the attributes of the individual reservations.
